Southeast Asia
π§
Southeast Asia, located south of China and east of the Indian subcontinent, is a diverse region spanning 4.5 million square kilometers and home to over 675 million people. Its geological location near plate intersections leads to frequent seismic and volcanic activity, particularly in Indonesia and the Philippines. Culturally rich and ethnically diverse, Southeast Asia is influenced by Indian, Chinese, Muslim, and colonial legacies.
Historically referred to as the East Indies or the Indies, Southeast Asia’s mainland section was known as Indochina, while its maritime section is termed the Malay Archipelago or Insulindia. The term “Southeast Asia” gained prominence during World War II and is now widely accepted, though its precise boundaries have evolved over time.
