North America, a vast continent in the Northern and Western Hemispheres, is bordered by the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west and south, with South America and the Caribbean Sea to the southeast. Encompassing an area of about 24.7 million square kilometers, it ranks as the third-largest continent by size and the fourth-largest by population, with over 592 million inhabitants across 23 independent states as of 2021.
The region’s history traces back thousands of years, with the presence of human populations dating back at least 20,000 years ago. European exploration and colonization, particularly by Spain and England, brought significant changes, leading to cultural exchanges and migrations of settlers from Europe, Africa, and Asia. Present-day North American cultures predominantly reflect Western traditions, with English, Spanish, and French being widely spoken. However, indigenous populations in parts of Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Central America maintain their pre-colonial cultural and linguistic heritage.
