Southern Africa

🧭

Southern Africa, the southernmost region of the African continent, encompasses various countries with diverse geographical and climatic features. One of the most notable geographical landmarks is the Zambezi River, which flows from Zambia and Angola to the Indian Ocean in Mozambique, boasting the impressive Victoria Falls along its course. Southern Africa experiences both subtropical and temperate climates, with the Tropic of Capricorn serving as a dividing line between these regions.

Commonly included countries in Southern Africa are Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. However, Madagascar is sometimes excluded due to its unique cultural heritage. Different definitions and groupings exist, with some based on physical geography and others on political or economic considerations. For example, the United Nations geoscheme identifies Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, and South Africa as constituting Southern Africa, while the Southern African Customs Union includes these countries as well.
